In Mississippi, 49 percent of families owned slaves, and in South Carolina, 46 percent did. It has a population of 2,976,149 (as of 2019), making it the 34 th most populous state. In 1845, the state supreme court ruled against Wade, allowing more than 200 slaves to emigrate, while about 50 chose to remain behind, enslaved.
